Climate Change champion Inia Seruiratu is now also Ocean champion.

The extra title came as Fiji committed itself to the Commonwealth Blue Charter on Ocean Governance.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural & Maritime Development and National Disaster Management told a press conference in London that it was a privilege to be part of this charter.

“For us this is not something new. This is a journey that we had started long ago and we continue to champion issues on climate change and oceans as well,” he said.

“Back in 2017, you have been aware, we co-hosted the conference in New York with Sweden.”

He urged all countries, members of the Commonwealth, “to help us with the oceans pathway which we are advocating”.

“We look forward for your support because the ocean involves all of us,’’ Mr Seruiratu said.

“You cannot deal with oceans easily in isolation because oceans and climate change are inter-related. Oceans and climate change have affected us significantly as an island state from the Pacific.

“We know how vulnerable we are and how much climate change has affected us.

“We are happy and privileged to be champion under the blue charter of the ocean and climate change action group.”

He said food security was linked to the oceans and climate change.
