The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team are wary of their pool opponents at this weekend’s Singapore Sevens.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, head coach Gareth Baber said they would have to be on their toes when fronting up against the unpredictable Russia, Spain and Japan.

GIANT KILLERS

The pool’s fourth seeded team, Japan reached the 2016 Olympic Games semifinals and narrowly missed out on a bronze medal.

“We really need to get our game in order when playing against these teams and making sure that we reach the knockout stages of the tournament,” he said.

Baber said these teams play a fast paced kind of rugby and are very unpredictable when in possession.

The Fijians are in second place of the 2017/18 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series with 123 points while defending champions South Africa are still leading with 126.

ANY TEAM CAN WIN

Baber said the games’ results are not necessarily dependant on table standings and positions.

“This will not be a walk in the park for us, as it is anybody’s game, I do not think any game in the international level will be a walk in the park.”

He further indicated that the results and upsets in the past Series tournaments showed that.

“Any team can win a tournament irrespective of their standings on the ladder.”

The Welshman also downplayed claims that their performance in the knockout stages could be affected by their pool opponents.

He said there had been times where they had two tough teams, or sometimes one, but that had no impact on how they would be performing in any tournament.

PRESSURE ON BLITZBOKS

“Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not but it totally depends on how we prepared ourselves for these matches.

“It is what we are given and there is no excuse for us not to perform.

“All we have to make sure of is for us to perform, do the things we were training for right and implementing our game plan.

“Apart from that there is no excuse or reason for us not to perform,” he added.

Baber also highlighted his intention of maintaining pressure on table leaders South Africa and wrestling the Series title away from them.
