Preacher Faces Assault Charge On Teenage Daughter

11:11 2018

A 46-year-old preacher was granted bail in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday for allegedly assaulting his teenage daughter.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm. He was represented by Legal Aid Commission, however, he chose to waive his right to a lawyer and represent himself.

The alleged incident happened on April 22, 2018, at about 7.15am when the accused woke his daughter up and asked her about the messages on his wife’s phone, which were allegedly sent by his daughter’s boyfriend. His daughter denied the allegation, which angered the accused who resorted to cutting her hair. He then allegedly brought their broom and hit her with it, but the complainant grabbed the broom. Then the accused allegedly brought an electrical cord and hit her with it. The complainant is alleged to have sustained bruises on her forehead.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Luke Qerawaqa served the accused with full phase disclosures and stated that he was not objecting to bail.

Magistrate Bodaragama released the accused on $200 bail bond and issued an interim Domestic Violence Restraining Order against him. He was further ordered not to reoffend while on bail. The case has been adjourned to May 23, 2018 for plea.
