The Ministry for Women hosted close to 30 women from around the rural and maritime areas in Fiji to a three-day workshop at the Pacific Theological College in Suva.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said the three-day workshop on Sewing Skills and Sewing Maintenance Training of Trainers showed the need for women to be able to train other women.

She said the ministry has had only one trainer who had been assisting in the maintenance of sewing machines for women’s groups in Fiji.

Ms Vuniwaqa said retired lecturers from the Fiji National University were now assisting the ministry to gather information and design manuals to assist women.

“These women at the training are skillful in sewing. This is a refresher course for them and to empower them to be able to maintain and fix sewing machines,” she said.

“It has been a challenge for the ministry because when machines break down whichever area it maybe the rural, maritime areas, the women are not able to fix it. They wait for somebody to visit from the ministry or send it to the ministry.”

Maca Vakasigaleka of Domokavu, Vaturova, Cakaudrove, said for the women’s group in her village it was difficult to look for someone to fix their sewing machines when it needed maintenance or repair.

Ms Vakasigaleka said there were about 60 women in the group and this was something the women needed.

“This training will help me train other women from my village,” she said.

Mesela Vave, 39, from Kioa said it was her first time to attend a workshop such as this where they would be trained on sewing machine maintenance.
