Special Constables will be removed from the Fiji Police Force if found to be negligent regarding escaped remand prisoners.

The strong statement was made by the Commissioner of Police, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho yesterday when the Fiji Sun asked about the measures taken by Police regarding prisoners in remand, escaping from the Court premises.

The issue was raised after a remanded prisoner; Emosi Baledrokadroka escaped on Tuesday while being taken to the Magistrates Court by a special constable.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro had confirmed Emosi Baledrokadroka was arrested yesterday afternoon in Khalsa Road and his partner was taken in for questioning for alleged harbouring.

Brigadier-General Qiliho said he could stand by and continue to get reports that prisoners were escaping from their custody.

“It has reached a stage where I have to take the tough stand for it to stop,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

He said he had given his last warning that if anyone was found to be negligent regarding prisoners escaping from custody, he would remove them from the Fiji Police Force.”

“Because my disciplinary powers in dealing with special constables are limited so, I can only give them warnings or remove them from the force.

“We have utilised enough time and resources by getting them off the streets.

“And if it’s due to someone’s laxity that the person escapes from our custody, tough disciplinary measures will be taken against those who are found to have been negligent in their duties.”

He said the Police Force was supposed to take people off the street who caused unnecessary havoc in the community.

“And to go through that process of time and resources to get them off the streets and the community, and getting them off for somebody to be negligent about it is unacceptable,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

“I have reiterated to my officers, my concern with prisoners escaping from our custody.

“I am looking at leadership and regarding the prison management and the escort service we provide.

“If the leader did not provide the right number of manpower, I have to address the leadership or if there was laxity on the person delegated that responsibility then we will go through the disciplinary process.

“I have said to them before that it has become an occurrence which needs to be cut off from the Police Force because for the prisoner to escape from our custody, is unacceptable,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.
