Ernest Movick of the Fiji Hockey Federation has been appointed as a technical official at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 7 to 14, 2018.

The winner of the 2017 Fiji Sports Award ‘technical official of the year’ was notified of his appointment by Dr Craig Gribble, the Official and Appointment Manager of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Movick is a member of the Marist Hockey Club playing in the Suva competition.

He first took up officiating in 2015 and in 2016 volunteered to work as a bench official at the 2016 FIH Hockey World League Round 1 which was played at the National Hockey Centre in Suva.

He was mentored by the Oceania Hockey Federation’s (OHF) development officer Gill Gemming of New Zealand during the tournament and eventually took over her role from the first day of the competition.

He continued to work with seven other Oceania qualified technical officials from Suva and Lautoka managing tournaments in the country since 2016.

In 2017, he was appointed a technical official at the 2017 FIH Hockey World League Round 2 which was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He did not officiate in the Fiji team’s first game in the competition but after his first game appointment he was used as a technical official or judge for all the remaining games of the competition.

He was one of three Fiji officials recommended by the OHF officiating committee to be an official at the 2018 Oceania Qualification Tournament for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games currently being played in Port Moresby.

However the OHF executive advised the Fiji Hockey Federation and Hockey New Zealand as both countries were not taking part in the tournament, that their officials would not be required to officiate at the tournament.

However, it is likely that Fiji officials will be taking part in the 2018 FIH Hockey World League Round 1 which will be held in Port Vila, Vanuatu in August 2018.

Fiji Hockey is proud of Ernest’s appointment which is a recognition of the opportunities provided not only for player development but for Technical Officials and Umpires.

Epeli Tukuca of Suva was appointed as an umpire for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
