With tears streaming down his face, Ratu Serevi Nakutoro attempted to revive Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Warrant Officer 1, Mosese Muakalou after he was mowed down by a van at Aerotown in Nadi yesterday.

The 23-year-old man said he was unsuccessful in reviving him due to the severity of the injury he sustained from the alleged ‘hit and run’ accident.

“We were on our morning walk at around 6.30am when we met him with his dog, we knew he was a humble man because he greeted us while jogging past us, but a few minutes after our encounter we heard a loud noise behind us,” he said.

“At first, we didn’t bother to look back”.

Ratu Serevi added his heart was heavy and that convinced him to go back and check what caused that loud noise.

“When we went back, we noticed a woman was already at the scene trying to help him and we saw that his dog was trying to retrieve something from a flower bed just near the footpath where he lay motionless.

“We proceeded further and when we noticed his running shoes lying on the footpath, I could not believe what I saw, the man whom we encountered a few minutes ago was lying motionless on the flower bed.

“I could see blood spots along the footpath leading to the place where he lay. The first thing that came to my mind was my father, I held him close, checked his pulse, his leg was broken and there was a huge cut behind his head, I was in tears but trying to revive him was unsuccessful,” he added.

A few minutes later, Ratu Serevi said Police and Military personnel arrived at the scene to take Muakalou’s body.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has confirmed that the driver was a 41-year-old man, and he has been taken into Police custody while they await the post-mortem results.
