Mere Rakoroi is the new co-opted Fiji Rugby Union board member and women’s rugby director.

The Tanoa Plaza Hotel Suva general man­ager and Group Sales Executive was ap­pointed during the Fiji Rugby Union annual general meeting yesterday.

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said Rakoroi’s appointment makes her the first women director at Rugby House.

“Rakoroi was endorsed as the co-opting board and first female director,” O’Connor said.

World Rugby announced women’s rugby is a fast growing sport and there is a need for a female director on the board.”

Financial report

O’Connor confirmed the FRU has recorded a surplus of $281,888 by the end of fi­nancial year last year com­pared to $1,051,638 in 2016.

“2016 was an Olympic year and we have additional grants from Government but we still have surplus outcome.”

Top Eight contracts

Skipper Cup competition ma­jor sponsor C.J Patel Group has increased its sponsorship to $500,000 from $360,000 last year which has also assisted to contracting of 40 players and coaches.

“The players and coaches signed their contracts and have got their pay in the first round of competition last week,”O’Connor said.

“All coaches are required to be accredited.”

There are three different contract packages the first consist of players who are part of the Fiji Airways Fly­ing Fijians team and playing in Skipper Cup.

The second package are for players who are part of the Fiji Airways Warriors and Drua teams.

And the third package are for players par­ticipating in the domestic competitions.
