A family visit to see their first grandchild turned tragic for a Suva couple.

Sekaia Bukuya, 47, died on Thursday after the vehicle he and his wife were travelling in was involved in an accident at Navutulevu, near Mango Bay, Serua.

His wife, Merewai Leibue, is admitted at Sigatoka Hospital with a broken leg, broken fingers and injuries to her face.

Details of the accident are sketchy and Police investigations are underway.

The couple was travelling to Lautoka to visit their newborn grandson to celebrate his ‘Vaka-Bogi-Va’ – an iTaukei traditional ceremony celebrating the first four nights of a newborn baby.

Distraught son Vilimone Bukuya said they called him about 1pm on Thursday and asked whether he would knock off early from work.

“I told them that I would see them that afternoon,” son Bukuya said.

“I told them to keep me updated on their whereabouts, but instead of an update I received the sad news from my brother Vunimasi Waqanitera Bukuya that our parents had been involved in an accident.

“This was after work when I had gone to Lautoka City to do some last-minute shopping, so at first I did not believe him.”

But after a while Mr Bukuya noticed that his brother had left a few missed calls and it was then that he realised that something was wrong.

“So I sent him a call back and that was when he told me the news of the accident and that it had claimed my father’s life and my mother was admitted at the Sigatoka Hospital critically injured.”

Mr Bukuya said that moment as one of the saddest days of his life, learning of his parents’ unfortunate accident and his father’s death.

“It was supposed to be a happy moment for us as a family … them seeing my son, but now my father is gone. This is indeed a very sad day for the family,” he said.

The family is yet to make funeral arrangements.
