First Slaughterhouse In The North Being Planned

The Northern division will soon have their first slaughter house if everything goes as planned.

This was confirmed by Ministry of Agriculture Livestock Consultant, Graham Reimers.

Mr Reimers said to make this possible the Government and farmers needed to work together.

“We will have to form a farmer’s cooperative in order to build a new slaughterhouse specifically dedicated to sheep and goat production.

And that will happen somewhere in the North that is quite central,” Mr Reimers said.

“The slaughterhouse that is to be built will be used for processing and selling meats to the supermarket and to resorts and for that we need a farmer’s cooperative.

“So we are going to form a farmer’s cooperative which will be responsible for the marketing of the meat and the distribution”“It is good that the Government is investing in this field because from all the livestock commodities in Fiji, sheep and goat offer the great potential for growth.

“There are so much imported sheep and goat meats that come into the country so the Government would like to see that reduced and substantial increase in local production.”

Mr Reimers added: “The Ministry is very keen to see locally produced with high quality sheep and goat meat in the Supermarkets and restaurants soon.”Officer in Charge, Animal Health production division Avinesh Dayal said they need to consider the whole process when it comes to cattle farming.“The Government and Ministry of Agriculture has got huge plans for sheep and goats in Fiji because we believe that there is huge opportunities in these areas in terms of income,” Mr Dayal said.“Slaughter- house would be part of the plan because if we produce a product and if we don’t have a market then that is something to think about.

“Slaughterhouse is one important facility that will help to do that.

Animals when brought from the farmer needed to be slaughtered in a hygienic way.”
