Fiji Nursing Association president Alisi Vudiniabola has reminded FNA members that they need to raise operational issues they face with their employers.

This comes after an issue was raised last weekend during the FNA annual general meeting on the shortage of resources in various hospitals.

FNA members requested their representatives to call on the Ministry for Health to plan for a day/week to conduct stock-taking and report on all the shortage/ limited resources and give valid reasons.

Ms Vudiniabola said the discussion of supplies in health care settings were actually up to them, as workers.

“We don’t have to wait for an FNA AGM to address issues that affect the safety and delivery of care. It is on us to make a stand. Most of us know how to put requests forward,” she said.

“Remember FNA is not your employer. We are a professional union that addresses issues that are not solved by your employer.”

She said if the shortage of resources was the cause of risks that affected patients’ care and lives, then the ministry or the nurses’ employers needed to know the risk and nurses needed to make a stand to be heard.

“That is something that needs to be remembered that we don’t have to wait for two years to keep bringing up an issue,” Ms Vudiniabola said.

Meanwhile, FNA general-secretary Salanieta Matiavi said the association had been receiving a lot of complaints on the shortage of resources and these were especially delivery kits within their workplace.

Mrs Matiavi said there used to be a board of survey within the ministry which conducted auditing and noted the write-off of equipment and what to replace.

She said they gave their recommendations to the ministry on having a board of survey.
