The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will stage a Fun Day on Saturday to raise awareness against animal cruelty.

The fun day will be held at the SPCA headquarters in Walu Bay, Suva, from 9am to 2pm.

Head veterinary nurse Shaneel Narayan said the event would allow people the chance to learn about animal behaviour and the importance of vaccinating pets.

The SPCA will also hold an adoption drive on Saturday and all pet and animal lovers are encouraged to attend.

At the event on Saturday, animals like dogs and cats or kittens will also be sold at half price. Pet lovers can also have their animals checked on Saturday as well, but charges will apply.

Assistant veterinarian Ryan Johnstone said it was vital for people to understand and know something about animal health and welfare.

“People should know about feeding animals with proper food, knowing their age and vaccinating them on time,” Mr Johnstone said.

“It is important to know all these things in order to prevent them from deadly diseases.”

The centre received close to 1000 cases of dog poisoning last year, a former vet revealed to the Fiji Sun.

A large number of cruelty cases were also from pet owner-negligence, something SPCA’s president, Deepak Rathod, agreed is a major problem in Fiji.
