The Fijian COP23 Presidency Team is focused on advancing the Work Programme of the Paris Agreement and is calling on all parties to share that commitment with Fiji.

COP23 Chief Negotiator Luke Daunivalu made this statement at a news conference in Bonn, Germany, adding that Fiji had no time to waste and that the Programme must be completed at COP24.

“Fiji intends to bring maximum ambition and maximum momentum to this process, and that will be our guiding principle over the next two weeks and beyond,” he said.

Mr Daunivalu further said the Talanoa Dialogue was a critical pillar of Fiji’s overall effort in reducing carbon emissions through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

“This dialogue is based on the Pacific model of decision making through storytelling and consensus building, and I am delighted to say that the global community is responding very positively,” he said.

A Talanoa Dialogue will be held on Sunday with most of the parties indicating their attendance, and Fiji is convinced this would achieve genuine results.

Mr Daunivalu also said the team was encouraged by the number of countries that had ratified the Kyoto Protocol and were urging the remaining countries to make that ratification a priority.
