Fiji imports 700 tons of shrimp annually at an estimated value of $24 million.

This was revealed by Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau during the opening of Fiji’s first conference on the Cultivation of Penaeid Prawns at Galoa Aquaculture Station in Serua yesterday.

Mr Koroilavesau said prawns were a high-value species commonly traded for hotel and tourism sector in Fiji.

“One of our biggest challenges is to try and reduce this import bill by promoting locally-grown prawns and other viable cultured fish to achieve imports substitution,” he said.

“While we are looking to welcome foreign investors, we are opening our doors to locals who are eager to join the viable industry,” he said.

About 50 partners and stakeholders participated at the conference.
