Kumar Scores First in Her Family

Kirti Kumar yesterday be­came the first in her family to graduate with a univer­sity qualification.

Ms Kumar, 22, who has an elder and younger brother, graduated in Trade Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management at the Fiji Na­tional University graduation cere­mony at FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

She is from Lautoka.

She said it was her father’s dream for her to get a certificate.

“My father has gone through lot of hardship just to see me here today,” Ms Kumar said.

“I feel proud to be the first to grad­uate in my family. I have made my parents’ dream come true.”

The 22-year-old is an ex scholar of Jasper Williams High School.

Her father, Sarvan Kumar, said he was very proud of her daughter’s achievement.

The machine operator for Punja and Sons in Lautoka, said he came from a very poor background where he was not able to complete his studies.

“Today I am very happy to see my daughter graduating because I and my wife only went as far as year 8,” Mr Kumar said.

He was jobless for four months af­ter their Lautoka factory burned.

“I never lose hope in my life to make my daughter complete her studies,” he said.
