The first Republic of Fiji Military Forces Regimental Sergeant Majors course (RSM) is underway at the RFMF’s Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

The nine weeks course aims to qualify participants in the area of operations, leadership, training and administration for the appointment of Regimental Sergeant Major.

During his opening remarks Commander Land Force Command, Colonel Sapenafa Keresoni Motufaga, said that at times, the expectations of commanders were not met ,which he personally attributed to a drop in military standards.

However, he believes that programmes such as the RSM course can greatly contribute to solving this problem and once again raise the standards to which the RFMF is known for.

Senior instructor and team leader for the 1/18 RSMs course, Warrant Officer Class One Silivenusi Vutikalulu, said he successfully completed his RSM’s course in Australia in 1997.

He was grateful to be asked by Commanding Officer Force Training Group, Lieutenant-Colonel Petero Talemaivatuwiri, to design an RSM’s course to help raise the standards of battalion RSMs.

“There is a total of 21 participants who were nominated from their various units. They have met the age criteria which is below 45, they have also completed all courses up to the Warrant Officers course and they have also been earmarked for RSM within the RFMF,” he said.

The operations and leadership phase of the course will be conducted by the officer instructors of the school while WOI Vutikalulu will be responsible for the ceremonial and training part of the course.

3FIR RSM WOI Tomu Kanawale is also assisting in the course.

The team leader said in the past, potential RSMs candidates were sent overseas to attend the course, but with the new locally designed course they were able to train our own RSMs. In the military, the RSMs primary responsibility is to maintain standards and discipline and also acts as a parental figure to his or her subordinates and also to junior officers.

Apart from the course syllabus, there will be visiting lectures from the Ministry of Defence on the defence review, Public Service Commission on the civil service reforms, Ministry of Labour on Occupation and Health Standards, Fiji Police Cyber unit on social media, Human Rights Commission on Human Rights issues and counselling by Father Leronio Vodivodi.
