Two near-death experiences in the space of four years have failed to deter a woman firefighter from the job.

In fact, they have given Rokowati Crocker the inspiration to carry on the job and the impetus to do better in her career day after day.

During International Firefighters Day celebrations in Suva yesterday, Ms Crocker described how fortunate she was as she shared her near-death experiences after 10 years on the job with the National Fire Authority.

As a Leading Firefighter in the NFA’s Training & Development Department, the 31-year-old from Mokani Village in Tailevu said during her journey for all these years she was fortunate to escape death twice while in the field of work.

“I have experienced near death encounters twice. One was when the Williams and Gosling warehouse at Walu Bay burnt down in 2010,” she said.

“I was with another firefighter while trying to put out the fire and we were standing near the window and because of the heat the window broke and flames came out the window,” Ms Crocker said.

She said because of her training she managed to escape injuries from the fire.

“I ducked to avoid getting injured and am lucky to survive,” Ms Crocker said.

Another incident she described was when an accident occurred on Ratu Mara Road when a container fell on a taxi. She had to save the driver.

“I had to get into the taxi and stabilise the driver where the taxi was almost flattened,” Ms Crocker said.

She regards herself as one of the luckiest women firefighters.

“While I was saddened it was a fatal accident at the end of the day I managed to get the passengers out alive,” she said.
