Daniel Kregting was not intimidated swimming with older athletes as he battled to win his first gold medal at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva yesterday.

The 10-year old from the Roskill Swimming Club in Onehunga, New Zealand was overwhelmed after winning the mixed U12 400 metre finals during the Fiji Swimming Long Course Age Nationals Championship. Kregting clocked 5 minutes 56 seconds in the race.

The student of Onehunga Primary School said this was his first tournament in Fiji.

Kregting began swimming at the age of five and has been participating in competitions for the past three years.

Kregting was happy to be back in Fiji where his parents were married.

“I always like to challenge myself to participate with swimmers who are older than me, ” Kregting said.

“I am enjoying the competitions and it is good to be back in Fiji where my parents were married in 2005.

“This competition has really helped me in trying to attain my bigger goal, which is participating at the Olympics Games in future.

“My parents have always supported me. My dad could not make it I am happy my mother Maryanne is here with me.”

Kregting will also participate in the U12 100m and 800m freestyle heats today.
