Ovalau won their first game in the Vodafone Vanua Championship at Ratu Ganilau Park, Savusavu yes­terday.

The men from the old capital edged Cakaudrove 17-16.

What happened: Despite the strong de­fence from Ovalau Iowani Teba of Caka­udrove scored the first try in the 7th min­ute.

Ovalau kicked three penalties in the first half.

Vilimone Dekei scored Cakaudrove’s second try in the 30th minute and a pen­alty to lead 13- 9 at halftime.

In the second half Ovalau scored a try and kicked a penalty while Cakaudrove kicked a penalty.

Fulltime: Ovalau 17-16 Cakaudrove.

Ovalau coach Laitia Masi said: “We will need to improve but I’m happy we won.”

Cakaudrove coach Rayne Simpson said:

“The boys played well and we look for­ward to playing Nasinu in our next match.”
