A staff member from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allegedly involved in a visa scam, has been sacked.

The Ministry confirmed that the staff was terminated.

Deputy Secretary Operations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arieta Moceica in response to queries sent to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Major-General (Ret’d) Ioane Naivalurua only confirmed that the female staff member was terminated on Friday.

Mrs Moceica said the matter had been reported to Police. She said the ministry was not in a position to comment any further while the investigation was ongoing.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that Police had received the complaint. She said the issue had been classified as an alleged fraud and that investigations were ongoing. Details about the case are sketchy. But it is understood that an internal investigation had been going on for sometime. Because of the seriousness of the case the officer was summarily dismissed on Friday.

The extent of the alleged scam is not known because visa issues are normally handled by the Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Defence.
