Five months of sacrifice to put together 36 paintings in the children’s ward at Labasa Hospital came to fruition when they were officially unveiled earlier this week.

The artist, Shivneil Kumar a medical imaging technologist at the hospital, said it was a wonderful and unique experience.

“The idea to paint the children’s ward was initiated by Doctor Torika Kunalau, who suggested we paint Bible characters,” said Mr Kumar, who is originally from Vatuwaqa, Suva, and who is serving his eighth year in the service.

“This project was proudly funded by the grant management unit and the Labasa Hospital administrators were very happy about the continuous support.

“To prepare the paintings well I did one month of research on characters from the Bible to get the combination of colours that would appeal to the children admitted in the ward,” he said.

“I had work from 8am to 4pm so after work I would spend late nights and even sacrifice my days off to get the paintings done.

“While I was painting I got the chance to have conversations with the patients and in the process I gathered a lot of information about how children felt when they were at hospital.

“They shared that when they saw the paintings they had a ray of hope and felt that the Lord was watching over them.”

Labasa Hospital Paediatrics Department Doctor Ingrid Nilsen thanked Mr Kumar for contributing his talent, skills and effort in beautifying the children’s ward.

“The painting of Bible characters transcends peace and it’s pleasing to the eyes,” Dr Nilsen said.

“We all at one point in time look up to God seeking peace and comfort and these paintings will help not only the children but also their families who look after them.

“The paintings have also brightened up the ward, which consists of 22 beds.”
