Mr Basalusalu said they want to help the village headmen so they are not left behind

Forty village headmen of the Macuata Province yesterday were informed about their role and how to plan and manage development through a two-day meeting organised by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs in Labasa.

Another forty headmen would be present today at the Kshatriya Hall.

Roko Tui Macuata Vilai Basalusalu said it was important that village headmen understood their role regarding development and know how to work with the Government and their people.

“Government is providing various kinds of assistance and service but unfortunately many of the village headmen are unaware about it,” Mr Basalusalu said.

“We want to help them so they are not left behind.

We are trying to influence them to work with their community to improve their livelihood and teach them how best they can use their resources.”

“All villages in Macuata are blessed with natural resources but many don’t know how to use or manage it,” he added.

“Through this meeting, we hope to hear from them and see how best we can assist them.”w

Orisi Vuki, village headmen of Daku and Ligau on Kia Island said he was delighted to be part of the meeting.

“I look after two villages and sometimes when I plan to do some kind of development I cannot because I don’t know where to get help from,” 30-year-old Mr Vuki said.

“Now through this meeting, I am informed how effectively I can access Government services and guide my people to work together to improve our living standard.”
