Tears slowly trickled down Alesi Tatavola’s face yesterday as her daughter Asilika Esiteri lined-up to receive her National Certificate Level 2 in Cookery and Pastry Making at the FMF Gymnasium yesterday.

Ms Esiteri, 20 of Viria in Naitasiri is the youngest of her seven children but one that always had her special attention because she was born with a disability.

“She is the first of my children to graduate at this level, I am so grateful and emotional as she has achieved a certificate that will guarantee her independence,” a teary Ms Tatavola said.

“She always have an interest in cooking and baking that although the course was not offered at the Navua campus she went to Suva to attend the Robertson Rd campus,” she said.

“This is the best Mother’s Day present, and Sunday is special lunch as she will be cooking as a qualified and certified cook.

“She is a strong young woman who has not used her handicap as a hindrance to what she wants to be.

“She is also what keeps us going at home because she is active and helpful.

“She has started earning and this is what every mother wants her child to be.”

Ms Esiteri was one of the 437 students from the four campuses of the Technical College Fiji Central that graduated yesterday.

Her family lives at Deuba Village, in Serua. She has been working at the Establishment Restaurant opposite the Pearl at Pacific Harbour the past four months as a kitchen helper.

“This certificate will confirm my job at the Establishment, and I will continue there on Monday,” she said.

Yesterday she was also handed a package that contained basic cooking utensils to assist her in her career or a business if she intends to do so.

“I like baking and with what I have received today I will be able to upgrade my baking skills.”
