Hundreds gathered and marched yesterday through the streets of Suva to mark Israel’s 70 years of existence as an independent nation.

Organised by Christians for Israel (C4I) Fiji Ministry, the celebration started with a march from the Suva Flea Market to Ratu Sukuna Park.

C4I Fiji national leader Lepani Makubuna said in the Bible 70 signified two things, one is completion and the other perfection.

“When we are celebrating the anniversary, we are not only celebrating the year. We are also celebrating Israel’s existence,” he said.

Mr Makubuna said this was because of their connections to israel, their roots and inheritance.

“The number 70 is not only significant in the Bible, but also in Jewish writings.

“So that’s why are celebrating this year’s anniversary,” he said.

“The Bible says it is through Israel that the nations will be blessed. We should appreciate Israel. There is a lot of significance, which is why people have come in numbers today because they understand their roots.”

Mr Makubuna said people’s presence yesterday was an outward expression of an inward reality, something that was in their hearts.

“This is nothing political just purely faith based, people understanding their roots,” he said.

“Today marks a milestone in Israel’s existence. Seventy years calls for celebration knowing our connections and our roots to Israel.”

Christians for Israel is a non-denominational movement.

It believes that Christians of all denominations and backgrounds should be united in their love for the Jewish people, in their support for the nation of Israel and in their collective repentance because of Jewish suffering throughout church history.

Established in Fiji in 2014, Mr Makubuna said they are home-based at Fletcher Road and Rifle Range in Vatuwaqa.

The State of Israel was established after a unilateral declaration of independence by David Ben-Gurion, who became its first prime minister.

The declaration, on May 14, 1948, came after the expiration of the British mandate over what was then called Palestine.
