Richard Derenalagi is following the footsteps of his father Sailosi Nawavu, a former national rugby rep.

The 22-year old scooped the overall player of the year and the most improved player awards during the inaugural Nawaka Rugby Club Awards Night on Friday.

“I am blessed to have been born in a village that has produced top rugby players including my father,” he said.

“They set the trend for us. I aim to be a Flying Fijian one day and I am working hard to achieving that goal.

‘I hope that other Nawaka players have set their targets as it is very important to set goals for the future,” the former Tilak High School student said.

He plays for Nawaka in XV and 7s and is part of Jack’s Nadi provincial team.

He is a final year student doing a Bachelor in Tourism Management at the University of the South Pacific.

“There is life after rugby and we need to be prepared,”Derenalagi said.

Paradise Beverages general manager sales and corporate affairs Joe Rodan Snr applauded the Nawaka Rugby Club for rewarding the players.

“I thank the Nawaka Rugby Club for hosting this first ever event as players need to be recognised for their contributions,”he said.

“The annual Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s has contributed to Fiji’s success in the sport over the years. In addition, sports build a healthy nation.”

History

The Nawaka Rugby Club was among the four pioneers teams that formed the Nadi Rugby Union in 1958.

Before the set up of NRU, the players from Nawaka, Dratabu, Korovuto, and Yako played under the Lomavata rugby team which was a feeder to the Northern Districts in the FRU provincial competition.
