Manasa Benito Waqavou, affectionately known as Ben Junior, considers himself lucky to have a mother who provided him everything a child needs.

And he wish his mother and all the mothers in Fiji all the very best in their special day today.

The Rewa goalkeeper shared how his mother Mereani Dinaceva had been a great impact in his life and football career.

As a single mother, Dinaceva opted that Waqavou be raised by his grandmother at Nakorotubu, Ra at a very young age.

While attending Bayly Memorial Primary School, Waqavou began playing in the school’s football team and it was where it all began.

“I was raised by my grandmother in Ra, when I started playing in primary school’s team.

“I did not know that I would later be a goalkeeper for Rewa,” the 24 year old said.

At 17 he was selected to be the goalkeeper for Nasinu Muslim College team.

Waqavou said it was hard at first trying to balance school and football career.

“My mother was one person who never backed down. She always attends to my needs and stressed that I focused on my goals.

I was provided everything any child could ask for,” Waqavou said.

“I wish Mum and all mothers a happy Mothers’ Day.

“My father is also supporting me in any way he can and I am also grateful to him as well.

“I was able to complete my Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) at the Fiji National University and my parents were happy.”

Waqavou currently works as a recruitment officer at the Fiji Elections Office.

Waqavou said the 2018 Vodafone Fiji FACT would be tough for Rewa as defending champions.

“The expectations will be high for us playing at home. I will have an important role to play as the last line of defence.

“I have been preparing well and I will do my best,” Waqavou added.

Rewa is in Pool A with Ba, Dreketi, Labasa and play their first match on May 25 against Ba at 8pm.
