Widows and mothers of Labasa Assemblies of God Church (AOG) have been encouraged to hold a compassionate heart and sacrificial love during a Mother’s Day programme yesterday.

Ajiran, 69, of Savusavu, said being a widow for more than ten years and living for her four children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren taught her the meaning of compassion.

“I am one of the oldest members in this church and there has never been a year where I have missed attending the Mother’s Day programme,” Ms Ajiran said.

“Every mother has the gift of compassion and can display that in many ways.

“Hearing church pastor Manikam Pillay’s sermon from the Bible, 1 Kings 3: 16-28 has challenged me to hold sacrificial love.”

Pastor Pillay said King Solomon demonstrated divinely-given wisdom by ruling wisely in the case between two women claiming possession of a baby boy.

“The compassionate mother stopped the king from using his sword to divide the baby into two and asked the king to give the baby to the other woman who claimed to be the mother,” Pastor Pillay said.

“A compassionate mother is genuine and will do anything to save her child, just as God demonstrated his love for us through the sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ.

“In the same way I urged widows and mothers to show their love to their children, husband, families and communities.

“Being a mother is an important role that the Lord has bestowed on women.”

Ram Rati, among 20 widows and 60 mothers was in tears when she was honoured with a Mother’s Day gift by the church.

The 70-year-old mother of two children from Korowiri, Labasa, said she missed the way her husband used to organise Mother’s Day celebration for her.

“My husband suffered a heart attack almost 20 years ago,” Ms Rati said.

“I am happy living with my children and dearly hold sacrificial love for them and always pray blessings over their lives like any mother would do.

“I just hope for those widows who are feeling lonely on this special day to be strong and live for your children because life is short in this world.”
