The Fiji Police Force will not review the criteria of having a driving licence when recruiting Fijians into the Police Force.

Minister for Defence and National Security Ratu Inoke Kubuabola made this clear as he responded to Opposition SODELPA MP Salote Radrodro in Parliament yesterday.

Ms Radrodro said from a human resources perspective driving was a skilled job and the requirement was not on the basis of the intake.

She asked the minister if the Fiji Police could consider a review of the requirement, to which Ratu Inoke said, “sorry cannot consider that request”.

Ratu Inoke said the rationale of the driving licence was a prerequisite for the Police selection from now and into the future.

He said this had been introduced because there were no positions such as drivers in the Police Force, except for the Commissioner of Police.

Other reasons included:

  • Officers needed to drive and attend to reports and investigate by themselves.
  • With the increase in number of vehicles including motorcycles, there was a need for more drivers because at times vehicles remained parked at the station without drivers.
  • There has been an increase in the number of vehicles in Fiji and policing this required understanding of vehicle operations and getting a licence formed a basis of this.
  • International agencies have driving licence as an essential criteria.
