The Land Transport Authority continues to beef up its enforcement operations, public awareness and budgetary allocation in an effort to address road fatalities.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala told Parliament that the authority had so far installed 25 speed cameras on poles.

In 2015, only 10 were active.

The cameras were installed in black spots around the country.

In addition, LTA has invested in the office process processing equipment at a cost of $900,000.

In terms of public awareness, the Authority carries out the following programmes:

      Home visitation;

      Driver intervention;

      Safer pedestrian crossing;

      Schools and community outreach programmes;

      Billboards; and

      Road safety messages on bus stops

The texting platform available to the public, 582 received 4,192 text messages for 2018 so far this year.

Mr Bala said the texting platform encouraged and involved the general public to assist LTA capture infringements such as speeding, driving running through a red light, mobile communication, loud dangerous music and defective vehicles.

In terms of enforcement, the Authority now has eight vehicles. Police also played a vital role.

LTA has also increased its manpower capacity by 20 per cent since 2016.

LTA budget allocation for Road safety alone has increased over the years:

2015 – $362,450

2016 to 2017 – $700,000

2017 to 2018 – $900,000
