Suva football rep Madhwan Aklesh Gounder was inspired by his uncle Chandra Rao to take up football.

The Rakiraki native said his family didn’t want him to play football.

“Taking up football was not my first priority. I wanted to be successful in life and get a better job so that I can support my family,” Gounder said

“My family didn’t really want me play football.

“I was motivated by my uncle Chandra Rao. He was a good player for Rakiraki. He was very skilful and he inspired me to take football seriously.

“I wanted to be like him.”

Gounder is a special police constable and has been supporting the team and his family.

“My father is alone at home as they are now separated with my mother. So I have been working hard at this level to support my family,” he said

Gounder started playing for Tailevu-Naitasiri in 2014 before he joined the Suva, Rewa and the capital side again.

Suva currently leads the Vodafone Premier League competition and one of the favourites to win the Vodafone Fijian FACT later this month. Suva is in Pool B with Lautoka, Tavua and Nadi. The capital side play Lautoka in their first game at 6pm on May 25.
