National Sports and Wellness Day on June 29 this year is focused on involving all Fijians to be more aware of their health.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou said the programme had been effective since 2015.

NFP MP Parmod Chand asked: “How effective has this holiday been nationally in reducing NCDs or amputations caused by NCDs such as diabetes.”

Mr Tuitubou said in 2015, Fiji was second on the list of Pacific countries for Non-Communicable Diseases.

He said Fiji was now the third and this showed the awareness and the programme was well in place.

“In 2015 Fiji became one of the NCD countries. We had the meeting in Tonga, but now we’ve become the third country,” Mr Tuitubou said.
