Newly – wed royal couple the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited to Fiji, it was revealed last night.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made the revelation from Tokyo while waiting to board his flight home after PALM8.

He was responding to a New Zealand Herald report that Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle have planned a trip to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Tonga in October this year as they launch themselves onto the international stage.

Mr Bainimarama said: “Fiji has issued a standing invitation to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit us and every Fijian will join me in warmly welcoming them when and if a visit is announced.

“In the meantime, we rejoice in the wonderful celebration of their marriage and wish them a lifetime of happiness and good fortune.”

In an earlier tweet, Mr Bainimarama said: “I had the pleasure of being one of the first to personally congratulate Prince Harry, a vocal climate champion and a follower of @fijirugby, on his engagement. Today, all of us in Fiji extend our joy to Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

He had met Prince Harry in London on the margins of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Prince Harry had expressed his interest to visit Fiji and Tonga

The pair plan to showcase their work as a new royal “power couple” later in the year, starting with a visit to Australia, where Harry’s inspirational Invictus Games for injured servicemen and women is being held in Sydney this October.
