Newly – wed royal couple the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited to Fiji, it was revealed last night.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bain­imarama made the revelation from Tokyo while waiting to board his flight home after PALM8.

He was responding to a New Zealand Herald report that Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle have planned a trip to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Tonga in October this year as they launch themselves onto the international stage.

Mr Bainimarama said: “Fiji has issued a standing invitation to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit us and every Fijian will join me in warmly welcoming them when and if a visit is announced.

“In the meantime, we rejoice in the wonderful celebration of their marriage and wish them a lifetime of happiness and good fortune.”

In an earlier tweet, Mr Bainima­rama said: “I had the pleasure of being one of the first to person­ally congratulate Prince Harry, a vocal climate champion and a follower of @fijirugby, on his engagement. Today, all of us in Fiji extend our joy to Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duch­ess of Sussex.”

He had met Prince Harry in Lon­don on the margins of the Com­monwealth Heads of Govern­ment Meeting (CHOGM). Prince Harry had expressed his interest to visit Fiji and Tonga

The pair plan to showcase their work as a new royal “power cou­ple” later in the year, starting with a visit to Australia, where Harry’s inspirational Invictus Games for injured servicemen and women is being held in Syd­ney this October.
