A woman testified in the Suva High Court yesterday how she was determined to report her niece’s rape to the Police after she heard about it.

The woman gave evidence as the complainant’s aunt.

She said on January 9, 2016 she was at the Nausori Market when she heard that her niece had been raped by her uncle. She said the first thing she did was ask the complainant, who admitted that she had been raped by the accused on two occasions.

The witness said the complainant told her that the accused used to show her money and followed her to the pig pen. The complainant told her that the accused made her lie down on the ground before he raped her. The alleged incident happened in a village in Tailevu.

The woman said she had to report the matter to the Police because the complainant had told her that the accused threatened to kill her if she said anything.

State lawyer Taitusi Tuenuku questioned the witness how she felt when she found out about the alleged rape. She said she felt sorry for the complainant because she was still young and because the accused had done that kind of behaviour in his old age.

The trial continues before Justice Riyaz Hamza today.
