Taxi Robber Jailed For Eight Years

An accused charged with aggravated robbery was sentenced to eight years and one month imprisonment in the Suva High Court.

The accused Peni Matairavula was imprisoned after Justice Vinsent Perera stated that his (Matairavula’s) previous convictions were testimony he had formed a habit of committing robbery offences.

The accused with two others instructed a taxi driver to drive to an isolated place while one of them held a beer glass underneath his throat.

The accused sitting in the front passenger seat took the driver’s mobile phone and money, The driver managed to flee from the robbers.

The offence was committed on May 1, 2013 at Mokani, Bau Road in Nausori when they robbed a phone valued at $200, a taxi meter valued at $300 and $40 cash from Mahesh Chand.

Matairavula’s partners in crime had pleaded guilty in the Magistrates Court and were sentenced to four years imprisonment respectively.

They will serve 18 months of their sentence while the balance period was suspended for three years.

In his evidence the driver said he feared for his life given the manner and circumstances under which he was threatened by the trio.

The taxi meter was later recovered from one of Matairavula’s co-accused.

After considering the accused’s previous convictions Justice Perera was satisfied that the accused was a threat to the community.

Matairavula was ordered to serve six years and one month of his sentence before he could be eligible for parole.
