Nineteen-year-old Abdul Faroon took the first step towards his dream of owning his garage yesterday by graduating with a Certificate in Hybrid Car Maintenance Level 3 from the Vivekananda Technical Centre in Malolo, Nadi.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu officiated at the event and applauded Abdul’s efforts in continuing studies.

The Korovuto, Nadi, lad drives buses for Dominion Transport Limited from time to time and was among the 17 people who completed the course.

“I want to own a garage in the coming years because I love buses and vehicles,” the former Nadi Muslim College student said.

“After Year 12 I joined Deoji Footwear as a sales rep before I joined the garage as a mechanic. My father, who is still a bus driver, motivated me. I see him driving buses so I wanted to be a mechanic and I do now drive buses from time to time.”

Mr Faroon plans to travel to Australia in coming months to undergo further training in his chosen career.

“This programme at the VTC is easy because it is taken to our doorsteps and even to our garage,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pushpa Wati, 62, of Korovuto was among the 68 trainee farmers who successfully completed the Certificate in Production Horticulture, Levels 2 and 3.

“I have never gone to school in my life, but I am convinced I can incorporate what I learned from my parents in those days to understand with what VTC teachers taught me,” she said.
