Devotees displaying their strong sense of faith turned up in numbers to celebrate Rath Yatra yesterday by prostrating themselves on the main street of Labasa signifying a special offering to their God.

This was after a week-long prayer virgil called Brahmotsavam Mela.

The Chariot Festival was organised by the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI).

This is an annual festival where people thanked God for their life and to ask for blessings.

The event has been celebrated in Labasa for more than 80 years.

Labasa Sangam Temple chief pundit Jayaraman Mohan said: “The highlight of Brahmotsavam is a procession of the presiding deities in a highly decorated chariot through the chosen route of Labasa Town and back to the temple.

“During this procession devotees make personal offerings to God by lying down on the road. This is to show appreciation to God because he is bigger than everyone,” Pundit Mohan said.

“People will stand on the side of the road to cheer and pray. In the Hindu religion to ask for blessing we touch the feet of the elders so in this occasion we lie on the road as the chariot is carried above them to ask for blessings for the people of Fiji and abroad.”
