Three men were rushed to Lautoka Hospital after sustaining serious injuries when the cars they were travelling in crashed in a head-on collision at Wamalika in Sabeto, Nadi yesterday.

The accident led to a traffic jam causing cars and buses to wait for almost two hours in a queue as a team of 10 firefighters with the assistance of eight Police officers tried to retrieve the victims out of a gas taxi in the middle of the road.

The other car, a hybrid, was driven by a man believed to be in his late 30s from Waikatakata in Sabeto.

He managed to escape the near-death accident and was lying in a ditch just a few metres from the road.

At the scene yesterday, Police officers reminded people in the huge crowd to refrain from taking photos of the accident saying that the camera flash could ignite a fire because gas from the taxi had started to leak.

Police spokesperson, Wame Bolatolu said the passenger and driver of the taxi sustained serious injuries.

“The Police officers were based in Namaka and Sabeto while the fire officers were from Namaka and Lautoka, Police investigations continue,” he said.

“People have been advised to take precaution while driving, especially during the rainy weather and all drivers should refrain from speeding.”
