Savusavu Chamber of Commerce (SCC) has come up with what it believes is a world-leading environmentally sustainable ‘Blue Model Town’ plan

Chief executive officer Karl Smith said the Savusavu Blue Town model specifically targets developing island and coastal communities that lie within these areas of acknowledged tropical marine biodiversity.

“The blue town model will showcase how the world can help protect this genetic bunker,” Mr Smith said.

“The global community has a vested interest in protecting our island nations and the diverse genetic resources of our tropical reefs and ecosystems.”

He said Savusavu, with its incredible natural beauty and diverse community, will highlight and showcase Fiji’s whole-hearted commitment to COP initiatives to not only reduce carbon emissions, raise climate change awareness, but also implement real and tangible solutions to preserve and protect our tropical marine biodiversity.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce seeks Government’s approval and support to assist them with this ‘outside the box’ initiative, Mr Smith said.

“We anticipate that after our Fiji Government issues a directive to develop the concept of ‘Savusavu – Fiji’s Blue model town’, corporate donors from across the globe: Inter and non-governmental organisations and the private sector will be interested to support such an initiative,” he added.

“While many of the technologies that could be implemented to create this model town are readily available in the developed world, creating a mechanism to bring such technology into our developing countries needs to be highlighted in Fiji’s COP23 model.

“Not only are we on the ‘front lines of climate change disasters’ but also, as we previously stated, it is the vast biodiversity of our tropical marine environment that is critical to our entire planets ability to adapt and mitigate the impacts of rising sea temperatures.”

Mr Smith said their president Justin Hunter has submitted this proposal via email to Minister for Local Government Parveen Bala and his team and also to Minister for Trade, Industry, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya seeking support.
