The 79 Fijian navy sailors who had completed their passing out parade earlier this month are now back at the Togalevu Naval Base for the four-week basic training.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Navy Commander Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake said their selection to the naval regular force would depend on this performance.

Of the 26 women who completed, he said, 15 would join the regular force and 11 would be in the reserve.

They would initially work in finance, stores and administration until Navy boats were equipped for voyages with women sailors.

Like their male counterparts, the female sailors were expected to adhere to regulations specific to appearance, grooming and health and fitness, he said.

Of the 53 male sailors who completed the passing out, he said, 15 would join the regular force.

Those in the reserves were eligible for selection to the regular force next year when those who had joined the navy in 1987 would be retiring.

Those in the reserve he said would also be considered for selection for peacekeeping duties
