Former Public Works Department employees Amelia Vunisea and Laisa Halafi will be sentenced by Justice Salesi Temo today.

Both accused women pleaded guilty to offences.

Vunisea is charged with one count of abuse of office and 34 counts of causing a loss.

It was alleged that between January 1, 2010 and May 31, 2010, Vunisea facilitated the processing of false payments to Professional Stationeries in abuse of the authority of her office.

Also between January 1, 2010 and May 31, 2010, it was alleged that she dishonestly caused a loss to the PWD by falsely facilitating the process of payment of $28,794.89. It was heard in court that Vunisea did not benefit from the offence.

Halafi is charged with one count of abuse of office and 13 counts of causing a loss.

It was alleged that between January 1, 2010 and May 31, 2010, Halafi facilitated the processing of false payments to Professional Stationeries in abuse of the authority of her office.

Also between January 1, 2010 and May 31, 2010, it was alleged that she dishonestly caused a loss to the PWD by falsely facilitating the process of payment of $32,066.77. Halafi received approximately $3000 to $4000 from the offence, but she did not know who profited from the balance of the money.
