A team from the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) will be in Levuka today to meet members of the Levuka Weightlifting Club (LVC)

Weightlifting Fiji had its emergency board meeting on Sunday but none of the Levuka Weightlifting club members or officials attended although coach Jo Vueti earlier stated that he could not make it due to family commitments.

The meeting was to sort out issues after Levuka Weightlifting club disagreed on the appointment of new national coach Hossein Tavakoli of Irani, who has been contracted until the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

But the Weightlifting Fiji executive board met and acknowledged:

  • A petition letter from some Levuka athletes and officials;
  • E-mail and media statements by Eileen Cikamatana, regarding her withdrawal from Oceania Championships, Junior World Championships and World Senior Championships this year.

Weightlifting Fiji president Atma Maharaj said: “We respect the decision of the athletes and officials. At the same time, Weightlifting Fiji has requested an independent delegation from FASANOC to meet with the athletes and officials who have signed the statements, to discuss the specifics and facts of the matter. “We are taking a conciliatory approach on this matter. We will provide further update of the outcomes once the delegation has completed its task.”
