William Reiher, 12, was inspired by Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps to take up the sport when he was growing up.

Reiher, who attends the Learning Centre Suva, will compete in the 50metres, 100m freestyle, 50m, 100m butterfly during the Fiji National Schools Swimming Championship on Friday and Saturday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva.

“When I was young, I wanted to be like Olympic and USA swimming legend Michael Phelps,”Reiher said.

“It would not be easy as it involves a lot of hard work but right know I want to be a swimmer as long as I can and I want to see how far it will take me.”

The Year 8 student was born in New Zealand and his family settled in Tasmania and Brisbane before they moved to Fiji.

He is the second eldest of two siblings Jack and Niko

“I started swimming when we moved to Fiji and I took it up to make me fit. But then I got to enjoy it and there is no turning back,” Reiher said

“My favorite event is the 50m freestyle. I belong to the Babale Swimming Club and we train on Monday and Friday. The swimming takes up more of my time so I don’t have time in other sports.”

Reiher encourages young people to take up swimming.

“It will take a while before you get used to it but never give up,”Reiher said.
