An 87-year-old man is currently undergoing trial in the Suva High Court after he pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

On the first count of rape between May 1 – May 21, 2016, the accused allegedly had carnal knowledge of an 11-year-old girl in Nasinu.

On the second count of rape he allegedly had carnal knowledge of the same complainant between May 1 – May 31, 2016.

For the third count of sexual assault on April 19, 2016 he is alleged to have unlawfully and indecently assaulted the 11-year-old girl by kissing her lips.

The accused is represented by Defence lawyer Samanunu Vaniqi.

In her opening address to the three assessors, State lawyer Kimberley Semisi said the complainant and her family were renting in the accused’s flat and he was their landlord.

The alleged offences took place during their stay in his property.

Ms Semisi will be calling four witnesses including the complainant to give evidence against the accused in Court.

Ms Vaniqi intends to summon a medical doctor to testify on her client’s behalf.

The complainant gave evidence yesterday in a closed Court session after Ms Semisi made an application for a closed Court during her testimony.

Justice Salesi Temo is presiding over the case.

The accused is on bail.
