Our forwards need to play a lead role in the upcoming Test matches: John McKee

John McKee is wary on the key role his forward pack will need to play in Test matches against Samoa, Georgia and Tonga.

The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians head coach made the comment during the first ever launching of the Fiji Rugby Union June Test Series and the Pacific Nations Cup at the Albert Park Pavilion, Suva, last night.

“We are focus now, it was good to be in camp this week with most of the players and we already started to do some work.

“We know it’s a very challenging test matches ahead and looking at all those teams, they have a very strong forward pack,” McKee said.

“We really need to be on top of our game up front and hopefully we can get on the front foot upfront and set our backline.”

The first two Tests at the ANZ Stadium comprising double-headers with Fiji playing Samoa on June 9 and Georgia taking on Tonga.

On June 16 Fiji face Georgia with Tonga meeting Samoa immediately beforehand. The final Test on June 23 Fiji take on Tonga at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

O’Connor anticipates exciting Tests

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor believes the event would be a special moment for FRU.

“This is the first time ever we are launching the test series and the PNC in such an event where our sponsors and supporters will be able to meet with our Fiji Airways Flying Fijians and coaching panel,” O’Connor said.

“We have an exciting three match Test series of international rugby on our doorstep as we start the countdown to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

We are all looking forward to welcoming our guests from Georgia, Samoa and Tonga not only providing them with some tough rugby on the field but also the wonderful hospitality of our people.

“We are going to see some great test match rugby in the next three weeks and I know you will savour the action and enjoy the lead up to a very special period culminating in the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo next year.”
