Sacked Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) official Navin Kamlesh has denied any wrongdoing.

The former manager finance was among the four top MSAF staff members who had their contracts terminated on Wednesday.

Permanent Secretary of Infrastructure and chairperson of the new MSAF board David Kolitagane had confirmed that the four – acting chief executive officer John Tunidau, Mr Kamlesh, manager human resources Louisa Tuimabualau and senior engineer examiner/surveyor Ieli Sefeti – were terminated because of alleged discrepancies in MSAF finances.

He said it had come about basically due to mismanagement and lack of good governance.

However, Mr Kamlesh said he did nothing wrong and that he was not afraid of anything.

“I am clean and clear from all these allegations,” he said.

He said in 2015, they had attended the Public Accounts Committee meeting and there was nothing mentioned on the allegations regarding the financial issues for 2015.

“I don’t know where the story came from, if they want they can check the Public Accounts report,” he said.

Mr Kamlesh added that the only financial issue raised then was the treatment of Government grant.

But, the issue was resolved and in order now.

“Apart from that, there was no financial issue.”

Regarding the allegation, he said, there was no investigation done.

However, he was questioned about some of the overseas travels expenses. He said the payments were approved by the then permanent secretary, Paul Bayly.

He was also questioned on the funds that were used to pay the wages and salaries of their new recruits. The funds were out of the budget.

“How can someone employ somebody and don’t pay them?” he said.

He added that the fund used was from within the organisation and there was no extra funds borrowed from outside.

“So I don’t know what the fuss was all about. There was no investigation or an independent audit done, it was just a presumption and whatever information was provided they made their decisions on that.

“Let them make it.

“All the years I’ve worked with MSAF, I did a lot of work, I did all the financial and accounting procedures, I set up everything to make sure things are sound and are according to the law.

“There was no mismanagement since it was a small government organisation and I don’t know where they got all these allegations from.

“I can go and do further investigations to clarify all these things, but it’s okay, there is no point.”

Mr Kamlesh worked for MSAF for six years.

The other three staff could not be reached for comment.
