While waiting for her husband to pick her up after work, Alisha Lal made more than 15 phone calls, but he did not respond.

Little did she know that her husband, Amit Maharaj, when on his way to pick her from Nausori Town, crashed his car into a parked bus.

He died on the spot at about 10pm on Wednesday.

Baulevu Community Police Post Committee vice president Hemant Prasad said he had raised the issue of buses parked by the roadside which was not safe for drivers.

Ms Lal had asked the company driver to drop her, wherever they met her husband along the way.

She did not meet her husband on the way and decided to go home.

However, while on her way she saw an ambulance and a fire rescue team where an accident took place.

She was not aware that it was her husband whom the fire fighters were taking out of the car.

When she came near the site of the accident she noticed it was their car.

The 30-year-old husband was a mechanic from Urucalia, Baulevu Road in Nausori. They have a two- year-old daughter Amisha Maharaj. His uncle, Navinesh Maharaj said Amit was a nice and caring man.

He said Amit never raised his voice while talking to anyone.

“On the accident day he was on sick leave and as usual whenever the wife does night shift he used to go and pick her up,” he said.

The late Mr Maharaj was a graduate from Fiji National University where he completed his diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 and worked as a mechanic in Walu Bay.
