Fijian Navy Commander Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake in welcoming the HMNZS Taupo sailors said they were in their second home.

After a yaqona ceremony of welcome, he said their arrival to patrol Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was a blessing to the country and they would have the full support of the Fijian Navy.

The relationship between Fiji and New Zealand he said had escalated to greater heights.

He said they should feel comfortable during their deployment and should enjoy their stay in Fiji.

“Feel at home, enjoy your deployment,” he said.

The Taupo’s Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Ben Flight said he was happy for the deployment because this was the first assignment of the HMNZS Taupo to the Pacific.

He said they would leave for their first patrol on Monday.

Captain (Navy) Tawake said four Fijian sailors would be part of the first patrol.

The patrols by HMNZS Taupo, in support of the Fiji Navy, will involve the usual compliance monitoring activities, which include two fishery officers from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries assisting with boarding and inspection of vessels.

New Zealand earlier sent inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Hawea to Fiji to help patrol the country’s EEZ, which encompasses more than 1.1 million square kilometres.
