Five research and naval vessels have visited the Fiji waters, this year.

Fiji Ports Corporation Limited chief executive officer Vajira Piyasena quoted the number while submitting the companies report to the standing committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence at the Standing Committee Room, Government Buildings in Suva, yesterday.

Mr Piyasena said one of five the vessels visited Fiji water was the Chinese Research vessel, Yuan Wang 7.

“In February two French naval vessels visited Fiji waters – D’entrecasteaux and La Moqueusc,” Mr Piyasena said.

“Yuan Wang 7, the Chinese research vessel has been a regular at the Kings wharf in Suva to refuel and restock the past years,” he said.

New Zealand navy vessel Taupo is currently in the country while RV Sonne a German deep ocean research vessel was in the country last month.

“Most of the vessels were here to replenish goods and to fuel up,” he said.

Yuan Wang 7 is one of the seven ships used for tracking and support of satellite and intercontinental ballistic missiles by the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Like other Yuan Wang ships, this vessel is not a single class of identical design, but instead, a group of different designs grouped under the same series that share one name.

The vessel, constructed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, can be out at sea for 100 days.

China has seven Yuan Wang space tracking ships, which have carried out some 70 expeditions and travelled more than 1.5 million nautical miles.

Construction on Yuan Wang 7 started in 2014 and it was commissioned on July 12, 2016.

It is 224.9 meters long, 27.2 meters wide and 44.2 meters high research vessel has a displacement of 27,000 tonnes.

It is capable of resisting strong typhoons, and capable of carrying 100 days of supplies.

The vessel is the second generation tracking ship of Yuan Wang series, capable of attaining speeds up to 20 kt, with a range of 18,000 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 18 kt.
