Nine farmers in the Northern Division were given power tillers yesterday to help them in their farms in Labasa.

The farmers paid one third (1/3) of the total cost of the tillers, while the balance was paid by Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).

Vegetable farmer Amlen Kishor, 44, said he was thankful for the assistance.

“I have been a farmer for the past 20 years and this is the first assistance I have received such assistance and I am very happy,” Mr Kishor said.

“The power tiller will be really helpful for me as a farmer. This will increase my production. Before I used folks and hired tractors in my farm, but now I don’t have to do that anymore.”

Agriculture Assistant Reshmi Ram advised farmers to look after their equipment very well.

“You have paid one third (1/3) for the power tiller, so you must ensure that you keep it safe. Your work is to look after it very well,” Ms Ram said.

“We will have day-to-day contact with all of you and submit reports to SPC to see the progress you are making.”

The power tiller supplier is Neritak.

Neritak Regional Manager Munen Lingam said they would train the farmers on how to use the power tiller.

“We will deliver the power tillers to the farmers and will teach them how to use the machine and some other important guidelines,” Mr Lingam said

“The parts are available at our shops and also have warranties. The power tiller is 10 horsepower and farmers must be careful when handling it.”
