Hindu devotees conducted their annual firewalking ceremony at the Nasinu Kaliamman Temple in Nadera, Nasinu yesterday.

More than 50 Hindu devotees marked the auspicious day after completing 21 days of fasting and 10 Poojas by walking on the pitch of hot burning charcoal.

A strong crowd of more than 500 people gathered at the temple to watch the devotees walk on hot charcoal singing praises to their Goddess Mariamman.

The men were dressed in yellow shirts and dhoti (loincloth), with sharp objects piercing their faces.

They walked and danced through Suva from Nasese to the temple at Duvula Road in Nadera, accompanied by a Police escort and fellow devotees. Along with the men, one woman also walked across the hot charcoal to complete her devotion.

At the temple bystanders from various ethnic groups witnessed the devotees continue their rituals late into the afternoon.

During the week devotees listened to the tales of the Goddess and enacted the life of the Goddess “Thirkuttu” by dancing a night before the firewalking ceremony.

The devotees looked thrilled as they overcame the pain and heat from the burning charcoal leaving no marks of the hot charcoals and piercing of spikes.
